Will Haley Voters Ever Support Trump?

There are still some Republican primary voters who are still unwilling to support former President Donald Trump.

A few of them were pro-Nikki Haley, but the rest of them were anti-Trump. After Nikki Haley left the Trump administration in 2018, she built up her net worth from less than $1 million to $8 million.

She accomplished this task by sitting on the board of Boeing, writing two books, and earning speaking fees.

But I believe there are a few highlights from her career that are admirable.

I think she did a great job as President Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations. My personal favorite was when she took down the Confederate flag in South Carolina.

When the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, Major Robert Anderson was forced to abandon Fort Sumter.

Ironically, the Confederate forces in this battle were led by Brigadier General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard. In 1834, Beauregard entered West Point, where Robert Anderson was one of his instructors.

After Anderson surrendered the fort, he took down the American flag and took it to New York City for a patriotic rally.

This flag was taken to other northern cities to inspire people to join the Union cause.

After the Civil War ended, Robert Anderson returned to Fort Sumter. On April 14, 1865, Anderson attended a victory ceremony where they flew the same flag back up on Fort Sumter.

Anderson said, “I thank God I have lived to see this day, to be here to perform this perhaps the last act of duty to my country in this life.” Today, that same flag is still at Fort Sumter.

This victory ceremony was understandably overshadowed in history books by the assassination of Abraham Lincoln later that night.

I believe that our country can have only one flag. I am glad that Nikki Haley took down the Confederate flag in South Carolina.

If we have any chance to reverse of the polarization in our country, our politicians need to do more. Our elected officials need to help Americans, whose wages are under threat from illegal immigration, poorly constructed trade deals, and artificial intelligence.

Republicans need to embrace a middle-class conservatism that provides solutions to these issues.

In President Trump’s first two years, then-Speaker Paul Ryan got his tax cut, but a Republican majority in Congress didn’t do much to help President Trump on his issues.

I think the main problem with the Republicans today is that many of them are still stuck in the 1980s. Perhaps an ’80s reference is necessary to explain to Nikki Haley’s voters that some of the solutions of the 1980s are no longer relevant in the 2020s.

Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, I used to love watching “Dallas” and “Married… with Children” on the weekends.

J.R. Ewing was a rich and ruthless businessman whom people loved to hate. Al Bundy was a cruel and miserable man, whom I hated to love.

Today, the Republican Party has more Bundys than Ewings. The Republican Party needs to have real solutions to the legitimate economic grievances of Trump’s voters.

In the show “Married… with Children,” Al Bundy’s life had peaked in high school when he scored four touchdowns in one game. After that, he became a shoe salesman and struggled to support his family.

In the first episode of the show’s third season (1988-1989), Al Bundy argued with the librarian, who called him a loser. I think Al Bundy spoke for millions of Americans when he said:

“Every morning when I wake up, I know it’s not going to get any better until I go back to sleep again. So I get up, have my watered-down Tang and still-frozen Pop Tart, get in my car with no upholstery, no gas, and six more payments to fight traffic just for the privilege of putting cheap shoes on the cloven hooves of people like you. I’ll never play football like I thought I would. I’ll never know the touch of a beautiful woman. And I’ll never again know the joy of driving without a bag on my head. But I’m not a loser. ‘Cause, despite it all, me and every other guy who’ll never be what he wanted to be are still out there being what we don’t want to be 40 hours a week for life. And the fact that I haven’t put a gun in my mouth, you pudding of a woman, makes me a winner.”

These people deserve better. Our politicians should not ignore these people anymore.
