Rep. Adam Smith to Newsmax: Rafah Assault Would Be a Catastrophe

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., told Newsmax on Saturday that an “all-out military assault would, in fact, be a humanitarian catastrophe.”

Tensions in the Middle East remain at levels not seen in decades with an anticipated Iranian strike against Israel appearing imminent. On Saturday, commandos from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard seized an Israeli-affiliated cargo vessel while Israel preps for a full ground assault on the border city of Rafah.

Smith, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, said the Biden administration’s policy toward Israel “has been clear from the very start.”

“We support Israel’s right to defend itself. We understand that the fight isn’t just about Gaza. Israel is threatened by Iran and they’re threatened by Hezbollah, and we support them in that fight and have continuously done so,” he said during an appearance on “America Right Now.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he has set a date for a military offensive into Rafah despite calls for restraint over concerns of high civilian casualties.

“There have been concerns that Israel’s lack of concern for the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the inability to get humanitarian aid has actually undermined what Israel should be trying to accomplish,” Smith added.
