Border Dispute Stalls Deal to Avert Shutdown

Negotiations to avert a government shutdown are at an impasse due to disagreements over the Department of Homeland Security’s budget and its failure to secure the southern border, according to The Hill.

The proposed legislative package, initially planned for Sunday, would have provided annual funding for the departments of Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, and others.

The delay has been attributed to the White House’s recent involvement, the Democrats seeking increased funding for Transportation Security Administration pay, and the Republicans’ call for more dollars directed to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

With the Friday deadline looming, Congress is pressed for time to reach a deal or relent to the first partial government shutdown in years.
