Biden Campaign Opens First Field Office in Florida

The Biden campaign is making a play for the Sunshine State.

According to Axios, the Biden campaign recently opened a field office in Hillsborough County, Florida, to mobilize voters for President Joe Biden.

Though Florida has been trending red statewide and voted for former president Donald Trump by more than three points in 2020, Biden’s campaign said it sees the state and its 30 Electoral College votes as winnable.

Voters will be going to polls to decide on a referendum to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, which the Biden campaign said it believes could help them capture the state. Florida currently bans abortion after six weeks, before many women realize they are pregnant.

In a visit to Hillsborough County on Tuesday, Biden blamed Trump, who resides in Florida, for the new abortion restrictions.

“Let’s be real clear: there’s one person responsible for this nightmare,” Biden said. “He brags about it. Donald Trump. [Abortion] should be a constitutional right. This isn’t about state’s rights. It’s about women’s rights.”

Biden had previously called Florida’s abortion bans “outrageous.”

Hillsborough County voted for Biden 52% to 45% in 2020, though Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won the county by 10 points in his re-election campaign in 2022.

A new poll released by the University of North Florida, has Trump ahead of Biden by two points, while a poll released last week by Florida Atlantic has Trump ahead by eight points.

“Florida is ground zero in the fight for our rights and fundamental freedoms, and we’re not taking anything for granted,” Jasmine Burney-Clark, the Biden campaign’s top staffer in Florida told Axios.
