Tragic Police Chase Spanning Two Counties Ends in Fatality

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General has released body camera footage from a fatal police pursuit that began with reports of car break-ins in Calvert County and ended in tragedy in Anne Arundel County on May 13th.

Around 5:35 am that morning, Calvert County Sheriff’s deputies investigating vehicle tampering incidents in the Huntingtown area spotted a car believed to be involved. When they attempted to pull the vehicle over on Plum Point Road, the driver fled, initiating a 25-mile chase into neighboring Anne Arundel County.

The dangerous pursuit came to a crashing halt when the fleeing vehicle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Birdsville Road and Solomons Island Road in the Harwood area.

The impact proved devastating. A juvenile female passenger in the front seat of the fleeing car was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The driver suffered life-threatening injuries, while a rear passenger had non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

As questions swirl around the appropriateness of the extended high-speed chase, the Investigation Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office is conducting a full review of the circumstances that precipitated this tragic incident spanning two counties.

County officials are also expected to examine existing pursuit policies while they await the investigation’s findings. Public safety must be balanced with protecting lives when suspects recklessly flee from authorities.
