Orioles Sweep Reds Behind Kremer’s Gem, Santander’s Slam

The Baltimore Orioles completed a dominant three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds with an 11-1 victory on Sunday. Dean Kremer was the star of the show, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk with six strikeouts.

Offensively, Anthony Santander supplied the big blow with a grand slam in the ninth inning, his third career slam. Jordan Westburg and Ryan McKenna also went deep with a two-run homer and solo shot respectively.

Kremer was in control from the outset, retiring the first 13 batters he faced until Christian Encarnacion-Strand singled in the fifth. The right-hander continued the excellent work by the Orioles’ starters in the series after Cole Irvin and John Means threw six and seven shutout innings in the first two games.

“Our pitching staff when we put it together is really good,” Kremer said. “I just wanted to follow suit, like our other starters. Pitch to our strengths and really attack these guys.”

The Orioles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Reds starter Nick Lodolo on Westburg’s two-run blast in the first. They never looked back, tacking on runs in the fifth on an Adley Rutschman double and McKenna’s homer in the seventh.

For the struggling Reds offense, it was more of the same struggles. They have now scored just two runs over their last 36 innings at home and are batting a major league-worst .209 as a team.

Manager Brandon Hyde was complimentary of his team’s mindset: “It’s a major league team who’s dangerous, so you definitely want to add on. It gives the starting pitcher confidence to get a little breathing room.”

The series sweep was Baltimore’s third of the season and their first ever in Cincinnati. At 24-16, they remain atop the AL East standings.
