Baltimore Mayor and State’s Attorney release joint statement after discussion

A public rift between Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates over crime-fighting strategies and political endorsements appears to have been resolved. The two leaders have released a joint statement announcing their commitment to mending their strained relationship and working more closely together in the future.

The conflict between Scott and Bates had escalated in recent weeks, with the two expressing divergent philosophies on combating crime in the city. Tensions were further fueled by Bates’ endorsement of Sheila Dixon, Scott’s opponent in the upcoming mayoral race. At the time, Bates remarked, “We just have two different philosophies in fighting crime,” while Scott accused Bates of playing politics.

However, in their joint statement issued on Thursday, April 18, the mayor and state’s attorney acknowledged that their recent disagreements arose from “miscommunications and misstatements.” They expressed a desire to move past these misunderstandings and work collaboratively for the betterment of Baltimore’s public safety.

The statement read, “Recently, we sat down for a very frank and productive conversation about Baltimore’s public safety priorities and the future of our work together. Unfortunately, our recent disagreements arose from miscommunications and misstatements that we believe can be addressed through regular meetings which will begin, next month.”

Both Scott and Bates emphasized their commitment to laying a foundation for a more effective partnership moving forward. “Our frank discussion allowed us to lay a foundation for what we believe will be a more effective partnership, moving forward,” the statement concluded.

With this public display of unity, the mayor and state’s attorney have signaled their intent to put aside political differences and work together to address the pressing issues of crime and public safety in Baltimore. Regular meetings between the two offices are expected to commence next month, fostering a collaborative approach to tackle the city’s challenges.
