Baltimore City Loses $67M in Sales Since April Riots

BALTIMORE (WBFF) – Baltimore’s April riots, which followed the death of Freddie Gray, appear to have had a direct impact on the economy.
According to figures from the State Comptroller’s office, sales tax numbers in Baltimore City fell in seven out of the last 11 months. In comparison, Baltimore County sales tax numbers dipped during only two months.
According to the figures, obtained by WBFF last week, Baltimore City sales were down 4.6% year-over-year in May 2015, the month after the riots. In June sales fell almost 5.5%. Even last month, sales were still down more than 2.5%. December took the hardest hit: with a 9.95% year-over-year decrease in sales.
Altogether, the city of Baltimore lost about $67 million in sales, compared to the previous year, since the riots in April.
