Off-Duty Baltimore County Police Officer Fatally Shoots Shoplifting Suspect in Catonsville

A man is dead after being shot by an off-duty Baltimore County police officer early Tuesday in Catonsville, police said.

County police were on the scene investigating the area around a car in the parking lot outside the Giant grocery store near the intersection of Rolling Road and Baltimore National Pike. Police said the officer was off-duty, working security at the store, when someone was suspected of shoplifting just before 4 a.m.

The officer then confronted the suspect and shot him in the parking lot, police said.

Police spokeswoman Ofc. Jen Peach said the officer “feared for his life.” She added, “We’re still trying to figure out why.”
