Pelosi: GOP More to Blame than Democrats for Harsh Political Discourse

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., argued Thursday that Republicans are more responsible for the downfall of political discourse than Democrats a day after House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot during a practice ahead of the congressional charity baseball game.

At her weekly press conference, Pelosi was asked if she saw the “worsening in political behavior” equally in both Republicans and Democrats but she replied, “No, I do not.”

She then listed out a series of examples of harsh political rhetoric from the right.

We have a president who says, ‘I could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and nobody would care,’” she said, referring to President Trump’s campaign. “When you have people saying, ‘beat him up and I’ll pay your legal fees.’ When you have all of the assaults that were made on on Hillary Clinton.”

“For them to be so sanctimonious is something that I really I must — sad for myself that I’ve gone down this path with you because I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to have the first discussion of it, and it will be for another day,” she said.

“Let’s all say, ‘let’s examine our conscience, let’s see how we can rid ourselves of our negative attitudes that go to a place that is like this,’” Pelosi said. “It didn’t used to be this way.”
