CAPE CHARLES, Va. — A tractor-trailer blew off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Thursday, killing the driver before he could be transported to a hospital, officials said.
The accident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. ET around milepost 15 in the southbound lane, according to Thomas R. Anderson, deputy director of finance and operation for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District.
A U.S. Navy helicopter that was flying by spotted the driver, Joseph Chen, 45, of Greenville, N.C., on top of the vehicle’s cab and hoisted him aboard about 5 minutes later, according to Mike Maus, spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic. Chen died as the helicopter was flying him to a hospital.
