Vegan Café In Tbilisi, Georgia Attacked By People Armed With Meat And Fish

It sounds like a bad joke: What’s a surefire way to anger people in a vegan cafe?

Attack them with meat.

Yet that’s allegedly what happened at Kiwi Cafe in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Sunday, when a group described by NBC News as “far-right extremists” attacked patrons while they watched a movie together.

“A group of people who prepared an anti-vegan provocative action, entered and started to be violent,” the cafe explained in a statement on its Facebook page. “They pulled out some grilled meat, sausages, fish and started eating them and throwing them at us, and finally they started to smoke. Knowing that all of the above is forbidden here, they were just trying to provoke our friends and disrespect us.”

The fighting apparently spilled out into the street and the cafe called the police, but the group got away and no one was arrested.

The New York Times reports that “who is behind the attacks remains unclear and analysts cautioned that it was far too early to say whether the incident was a violent prank, a revolt against veganism or part of a nationalist attack against the freewheeling Western liberal values epitomized by the cafe.”
